What Makes Family Business Leadership Unique

Leadership in a family business is different. It’s harder, due to the seemingly competing forces of the family and the business. Join Cathy and other FFI Midwest Chapter members to learn how this manifests in family businesses, then practice how to make leadership decisions using the framework of polarity maps.

Made famous by Dr. Barry Johnson in the 1970s, Polarity ThinkingTM helps leaders appreciate the upsides and downsides of opposite poles, such as strategy and execution or centralization and decentralization. It also helps people identify unconscious pole preferences and blind spots in decision making. These unconscious blind spots can lie at the root of conflict in a family business, as well as unconsciously bias how practitioners advise their family firm clients.

Based on research from Cathy’s upcoming book, this event will introduce both practitioners and family business leaders to useful tools designed to help navigate some of the wicked problems in family businesses, which are riddled with challenging leadership polarities:

·         Common tensions family business leaders face

·         Practical tools and strategies to manage these tensions

·         Creative interaction with family business professionals
