Thriving vs. Trapped in the Family Business

Although it is rarely discussed, many owners and family members who work in family-run businesses did not choose their careers. These individuals often enter and stay in family businesses despite professional stagnation, low satisfaction, and even misery. Based on research for his book Trapped in the Family Business, Dr. Michael Klein will share some of the many reasons that family members who work in the family business are put in “emotional handcuffs,” what the results often are, and offer recommendations for managing and preventing these scenarios.

Michael A. Klein, PsyD, is the principal of MK Insights, LLC in Northampton, MA. He helps businesses make effective hiring decisions, develop the skills of their leaders, and grow trusting and collaborative teams and workplaces. His book, Trapped in the Family Business, addresses many of the complexities of entering, working in, and exiting family businesses.
