"Making Sense of the Mess”

In this workshop presentation, Dr. Justin Craig stays true to the Kurt Lewin dictum that "there is nothing so practical as a good theory.” Specifically, he shares several theory-driven and evidenced-based frameworks that are effectively ‘lenses’ useful in assisting family business advisors in making sense of the complex and often messy domain that is family business. Having introduced these concepts to hundreds of students of family business (including advisors, executives, and owners) in many countries, he assures that the concepts he will share are ‘sticky’ and will make useful additions to the advisor’s armory.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Justin B. Craig, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship, D’Amore McKim School of Business Northeastern University

Dr. Craig’s research focuses on entrepreneurial multi-generational family enterprises and those responsible for their stewardship. His empirical studies focus on relationships among strategic orientation constructs (such as brand identity, entrepreneurial orientation, stewardship climate, market orientation, and attitudes toward the natural environment), innovativeness, and comparative measures of firm performance. Notable among his conceptual work has been the investigation of the role of issue selling by next generation family members while his application of the strategic measurement and management tool, the Balanced Scorecard, to family firms has been widely recognized and is ongoing. He also served as a member of the 2014 FFI conference committee and chair for the 2014 Research & Education Symposium.
