According to a recent study by the Clarkson Centre for Board Effectiveness (CCBE), family-controlled corporations have outperformed their widely-held counterparts over the past 20 years.  Since 1993, 21 family-owned issuers on the S&P/TSX Composite Index generated shareholder returns 41% greater than the rest of the Index.  For years, controlled companies have been viewed as second class citizens by governance ratings, most of which penalize voting imbalance, director relationships and combined CEO/Chair positions.  This session, led by CCBE Manager Matt Fullbrook, will include a presentation of the study’s findings and a discussion of the governance of family-controlled companies.

About the Presenter:

Matt Fullbrook is the Manager of the Clarkson Centre for Board Effectiveness (CCBE) at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Under his direction, the CCBE has evolved into the central hub of governance research in Canada. Matt has overseen the development and execution of all of the CCBE’s projects since 2004, including the Board Shareholder Confidence Index, Pay/Performance assessment, SME governance ratings, and Credit Union board effectiveness surveys. Matt is also an experienced consultant to boards of directors in all sectors, helping them to maximize their effectiveness through the formalization of important practices.
