The unique challenges of real estate families will be discussed in the context of a third-generation family feud concerning their $250M real estate management company. From acquisition to management and development, the presentation will explore what advisors need to know to help these families succeed in their generation.

 

Learning Outcomes:  

  1. The language of real estate—from performance metrics to the development process, attendees will learn how to identify where their clients are in the continuum of successful real estate management and development.  
  2. Attendees will acquire tools to help manage family conflict over inherited real estate holdings and help family managers extend entrepreneurial behavior in their generation. 

 

Presentation Agenda:     

  1. Presentation and analysis of the third generation, $250M value real estate holdings through the lens of ownership, management, family history, governance, and advisors 
  2. Deconstructing conflict—What mistakes did this family make which led to conflict?
  3. What do we, as advisors, need to know to address families with real estate as their core holding?
  4. What can advisors take away from this case regarding best practice in management and governance?

 

Presenters:

 

Blair Trippe – Blair is Managing Partner of Continuity, LLC.  She earned her MBA from Kellogg, studied psychology at Connecticut College, received mediation training at Harvard’s Program on Negotiation, holds the FFI Certificate in Family Business Advising, and co-authored Mom Always Liked You Best – A Guide to Resolving Family Feuds, Inheritance Battles & Eldercare Crises.  

 

Paul Faxon – Paul is a Senior Consultant at Continuity, LLC.  As an attorney, Paul has more than 25 years of experience representing both privately held real estate and family owned business enterprises. He works with clients to resolve disputes related to restructurings and break-ups, as well as commercial real estate and construction conflicts through mediation, serving as a non-litigation legal advocate, or as a Collaborative Law practitioner.
