The Family Firm Institute (FFI) recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of family business advising and to the understanding of family firms as a form of business enterprise by annually bestowing four awards for outstanding achievement, two awards for FBR excellence, and two academically oriented awards. The 2010 awards will be presented at the FFI annual conference in Chicago, October 13-16 and 2011 in Boston, October 10 - 13. ACADEMIC AWARDS1. Best Doctoral Dissertation AwardPURPOSETo encourage and recognize outstanding academic achievement in the field of family business study.
The FFI award for Best Dissertation is awarded annually after a blind, peer review of all submissions. Dissertations may be on any topic of relevance to the understanding and appreciation of family firms and/or family firm advisors. Dissertations must have been written as part of a graduate course of study at an accredited academic institution, and defended in the last calendar year.
AWARD AMOUNT:$2,500 TO SUBMITSend a brief cover email stating that the research paper is being submitted for consideration for the Best Dissertation Award and attach to the email three documents in Microsoft Word (or a pdf) in 12 point font:a completed doctoral dissertation, a one-page abstract (single spaced) of not more than 120 words, and a summary (singe spaced) of not more 20 pages of the following criteria listed under qualitative and quantitative research. Dissertations can be in any language, but the abstract and summary must be submitted in English.
Qualitative Research The overall quality of the entry will be based on: purpose and significance of the study, research questions, literature review, research design, sample, data collection, data analysis, findings, theory (if applicable), limitations of the study, implication for practice and research
Quantitative Research The overall quality of the entry will be based on: literature survey, model development, hypothesis generation, research design, sample and site selection, data gathering methods, variable definition and measurement, data analysis methods, findings and conclusions, limitations of the study, implications for theory and research.
The paper should include the author's name, address, and phone/fax and email on the title page only to awards@ffi.org. 2. Best Unpublished Research Paper AwardPURPOSETo recognize outstanding, unpublished research in the field of family business study.
The FFI award for Best Unpublished Research Paper is awarded annually after a blind, peer review of all submissions. Papers may be on any topic of relevance to the understanding and appreciation of family firms and/or family firm advisors. The manuscript should not have been accepted for publication at the time it is submitted for the award. The winning article/s must be submitted to FBR for publication consideration. FBR will use an expedited review process these winning articles.

Award notification: Nominees will be notified of the decision in writing by August 15, 2011. Winners are expected to be present at the 2011 conference in Boston in October 2011. Winners will also be invited to present at the Family Enterprise Research Conference (FERC) in 2011. FBR Awards1. Best Article AwardPURPOSETo recognize the best article published in FBR in the previous calendar year.
The FFI award for Best Article Published in the Family Business Review is given to recognize and celebrate the strongest contribution in FBR, highlighting FBR's pioneering and anchoring role in the field of family business studies. AWARD AMOUNT: $2,500 THE PROCESSWinners will be judged by a committee of three people from FBR Editorial Advisory Board. 2. Outstanding Reviewer AwardPURPOSETo honor and acknowledge the best FBR reviewer in the previous calendar year.
The FFI Award for Oustanding FBR Reviewer will be given to the reviewer who has excelled in their reviewing for FBR, highlighting the importance of reviewers in the development and publication of scholarly research. AWARD AMOUNT: $500 THE PROCESSThis award will be chosen by The Editor and Associate Editors of FBR .
AWARDS FOR ACHIEVEMENT1. Richard Beckhard Practice AwardPURPOSEThe Richard Beckhard Practice Award, established by FFI in 1992 to honor a founding member of FFI and a distinguished practitioner in the family business field, recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of family business practice. CRITERIACandidate is to be engaged primarily in the practice of advising and consulting with family businesses, plus one or more of the following: - Significant contribution to the delivery of advising or consultancy services to family businesses as demonstrated by published and unpublished materials.
- Excellence in delivery of a client intervention as demonstrated by a case study, video or other documentation.
- Development of widely applicable and successfully tested consultancy or advisory tool or method used to assist family businesses.
- Leadership within FFI in the promotion of responsible and excellent practice.
2. Barbara Hollander AwardPURPOSEThe Barbara Hollander Award was created in 1993 to honor the late founder and first president of FFI by perpetuating her profound interest in family business and her love for education and learning. The Award recipient exemplifies Barbara Hollander's love of education and learning, life-long commitment to social causes, dedication to civic responsibility, belief in the human capacity to change for the better, and belief in giving to others generously.
CRITERIACandidate is to be significantly engaged in the education, study and understanding of the family and social dynamics of family business and may be an organization, or a graduate student studying family business or a faculty member in a program for family businesses; plus one or more of the following:
- Contribution to civic, charitable, educational or other nonprofit organizations which support human betterment and social change demonstrated through written testimonial.
- Leadership in promoting recognition of the economic and social prominence of family enterprise.
- Active participation and support of FFI through participation in FFI's educational, membership and organizational activities.
3. Interdisciplinary Achievement AwardPURPOSEThe Interdisciplinary Achievement award recognizes outstanding achievement in the advancement of interdisciplinary services to business families.
CRITERIACandidate is to be an individual or organization engaged in providing and/or advocating an interdisciplinary approach to the delivery of professional services to family businesses; plus one or more of the following: - Exemplary success in using an interdisciplinary approach demonstrated by a case study or detailed account of the work.
- Significant contribution to the promotion of an interdisciplinary approach through writing, teaching or prominent involvement with professionals in promoting interdisciplinary practice.
4. International AwardPURPOSETo recognize an individual or organization for outstanding achievement in furthering the understanding of family business issues which occur between two or more countries. CRITERIACandidate is to be an individual or organization engaged in family business activities occurring between two or more countries.In addition to the quality of the work, the activities may include: - Educational programs with the primary focus on the work of family businesses crossing international borders.
- The practice of advising and consulting with family businesses.
- Achievements in family owned businesses based on consultancy work as demonstrated by published or unpublished
- materials.
- Promoting recognition of the economic and social prominence of family business.
- The collaborative efforts of educators, advisors, and/or family business members between two or more countries.
- Or explorations, as demonstrated by written case study, video or other documentation, of family businesses from different national perspectives.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR AWARDS FOR ACHIEVEMENT
- Nominees do not have to be members of FFI.
- Nominees may not nominate themselves or the organization by which they are employed or in which they have a business interest.
- The Awards Committee may directly solicit nominees for any award
- Nominators are responsible for securing the willingness of the nominee to be considered.
- Candidates will remain in the committee's active list for two years following the year of nomination.

CO-SPONSORED AWARDSJeffrey Rothstein AwardThis award, created in 2008 is co-sponsored by FFI & Hubler Family Business Consultants. This award is in memory of Jeff Rothstein, long time member of FFI and former board member. The award is for the most creative research paper from a new/emerging scholar as judged by the annual IFERA awards panel. Winner is entitled to: • One complimentary registration to an IFERA Conference • Complimentary one year membership in FFI • Complimentary registration to the FFI Main Conference and the Education Symposium in the same year as the award is won. • Up to a $1000 US travel stipend to offset travel costs to the FFI Annual Conference. (This stipend is paid after the receipt at FFI of expenses.) • Acknowledgement at the FFI Awards ceremony at the Annual Conference. This award is non-transferable and can only be used for the above items. NEW AWARDSTo propose a new FFI award, please follow the process below:
- Review the current award to make sure that what is being proposed is sufficiently different from the awards already in place.
- Submit your suggestion to the FFI Executive Director, who will review it and ask for further information or clarification, if necessary, after which the proposed award will go to the FFI Awards Committee. This committee will then make a recommendation to the FFI board.
